A Day In the Life of A Digital Nomad

A Day in the Life of A Digital Nomad

Being a digital nomad can be one of the greatest gifts of your work career. I worked in tech in Corporate America for most of my career as a black woman; whew! I didn't anticipate the toxic environment.

They are just not ready for us!

One of the most transformative and liberating choices I've made is to live on my terms. Since committing to this path, I've discovered a profound sense of peace in my life, and I can genuinely say that I'm happy! With this freedom, I am showing up differently in the world - free to creatively express myself and free to explore the world.

Life is different when you are not bound by someone else's rigid agenda, and I'm no longer willing to give up my freedom or peace.

The world often urges us to pursue a high-level career and build a white picket fence as the definition of success, but it's essential to ask ourselves: at what cost?

Let's dive into A Day in the Life of a Digital Nomad, the pros, cons, and everything else no one is discussing.

The beauty of this lifestyle:

You get to wake up and choose how to create your day. I love slow starts to my mornings and easing into my day, whether starting by spending a few hours at the beach and then flowing into my work. Or swimming laps at the pool and then deciding to work poolside.

I get to tap into my natural rhythms and flow of creating. I've found that my natural creative juices flow with more ease. I have slowed down a lot and move through the world more mindfully.

I often ask myself this question: Am I overworking, and if so, why?

You can be productive without overworking. The outside forces that make you think you have to be a work-a-holic to prove you are good enough so they can profit from you when you get sick.

Versus, during my corporate days, rushing and stress were my constant companions. The pressure and high-stress levels didn't stop from the moment I opened my eyes. It felt like someone else held the reins to my time, and I didn't particularly enjoy having my day dictated by someone else's agenda.

I was gradually losing myself, unable to fully engage my mind. Constantly consumed by anxiety, especially because I had witnessed the consequences faced by my colleagues if I failed to meet monthly targets. It was a vicious and unforgiving cycle.

The digital nomad lifestyle allows you to work from any corner of the world; it doesn't confine you to a single location. Whether you work from a cozy coffee shop in the heart of the motherland or find yourself sipping your coffee in the park in Sabaneta, Colombia, the following week, the world is your oyster, waiting to be explored.

You also are at peace. No longer dreading Sunday’s or thinking the weekend cheated you. You own your time and you are intentional with you work. I only choose to do work and projects I love.

This energy changes your day to day and work is no longer work - it’s enjoyment. Something that brings you pleasure! And you get paid for doing work you love.

Now, let's uncover the disadvantages of the digital nomad lifestyle:

If you are a workaholic, those same tendencies may persist. It's crucial to intentionally manage your schedule because it's easy to find yourself working through your precious weekends. I've grappled with this in my career, so I've made a deliberate effort not to overwork. Nowadays, I've established a clear boundary – I refrain from working on weekends or holidays and set a specific time to stop taking client calls.

In 2022, I embarked on an adventurous journey, traveling continuously for six months. However, I found myself burnt out from the constant travel and longing for the comfort of my bed at home.

It became evident that having a home base was essential for me. While I have a deep love for exploring new places, I also cherish the coziness of home. It's crucial to acknowledge that establishing a home base comes with its own set of costs, and this expense should be factored into your budget.

When you work for yourself, you might encounter periods when your business slows down, or if you're a consultant, your clients' businesses may experience a slowdown. To effectively navigate these challenges, diversifying your income streams is essential. This approach ensures that money flows from various sources, reducing your reliance on a single income stream.

When I work with clients who would like to live on their own terms, we work on their relationship with money before fully immersing themselves fully in this lifestyle.

You cannot run away from yourself. If the same money situations keep showing up in your life, they will keep repeating themselves until you look at them.

Those recurring money issues may amplify when you don't have the false security blanket of a consistent paycheck.

Business is different when you’ve made peace with money. You recognize that you have capacities with money that assist you with having money, and these capacities show up when you are no longer allowing money to define your happiness or what you can have access to. You go beyond that - and enter the kingdom of financial peace. Your bank account does not determine your access - you tap into ALL the currencies of money.

Be in this world but not of it!

While it's true that there are disadvantages to the digital nomad lifestyle, there's one undeniable aspect that outweighs all the drawbacks: the gift of time, freedom, and inner peace. It's essential to remember that peace and happiness are priceless, and this way of life can extend your life by decades.
